Abstract

A total of 182 molars were examined under surgically open condition to observe the distribution of severe cervical enamel projection (CEP) and- the relationship between the presence of CEP and furcation involvement.
CEP was found; in decreasing order of incidence, on mandibular 1st molars, maxillary 2nd molars, maxillary 1st molars and mandibular 2nd molars, predominantly on buccal surface. In the severity of CEP, grade III was prevalent on buccal surface while grade I was most common on lingual and proximal surfaces. The mandibular molars and maxillary 2nd molars gave a statistically significant relationship between frugally involved molars and CEP.
These results support the concept that CEP is a cofactor in the etiology of furcation involvement during the progression of periodontal disease.
